Critics dismissed Immanuel Wallerstein's World-Systems Analysis as a rigid, finished historical artifact of the 1970s; thirty years of empirical updates demonstrate its enduring power to explain global geopolitical fragmentation and supply chain inequality.

Immanuel Wallerstein's World-Systems Analysis revolutionized sociology by demonstrating that modern nations cannot be understood in isolation: they operate within an interconnected global capitalist world-economy divided into core, semi-periphery, and periphery zones.
With the fall of the Soviet Union and the rise of neoliberal globalization, critics claimed world-systems theory was an outdated relic incapable of accounting for digital technology, Chinese ascendance, and ecological crises.
Published in the British Journal of Sociology, this retrospective and methodological manifesto demonstrates that theories are never finished products. Synthesizing thirty years of empirical updates, the author shows how world-systems analysis has evolved to explain global semiconductor supply chain choke points, ecological unequal exchange, and the structural crisis of US hegemony.
Revitalizing world-systems theory equips contemporary sociologists and economists with a macro-historical compass to navigate modern deglobalization, geopolitical multipolarity, and planetary climate transitions.
Only Fools Believe Their Theories Are Finished Products! Thirty Years of Updates to the ‘Racialized Social Systems’ Approach to Race Matters
In this address, I discuss the theoretical work I have developed since the publication of my article "Rethinking Racism: Toward a Structural Interpretation" in 1997. First, I discuss the idea of "racial habituation." As part of this discussion, I highlight the centrality of "white normativity" to understand racial affairs. Second, I examine the formation of racial subjects and underscore the import of "regular white folks" (RWF henceforth) in the maintenance of white supremacy regimes. Third, I explore several sources for change. I end my address with an appraisal of the relevance of my claims and mention a few elements that still need to be theorized.
