Breathing the Sky: Compiling Henry's Law Constants for Atmospheric Chemistry

Breathing the Sky: Compiling Henry's Law Constants for Atmospheric Chemistry

Earth's atmosphere is a turbulent, multi-phase chemical reactor where thousands of volatile organic compounds, industrial pollutants, and natural emissions transition constantly between gas and liquid cloud droplets.

Predicting acid rain formation, urban smog, and aerosol climate forcing requires knowing the gas-liquid partitioning coefficient—Henry's law constant—for each chemical species, yet values were scattered across hundreds of conflicting experimental papers spanning a century.

This monumental atmospheric chemistry compilation systematically reviews and harmonizes Henry's law constants for thousands of organic and inorganic chemical species dissolving in water. The authors establish standardized temperature dependencies, hydration equilibria, and aqueous phase conversion factors.

Providing a unified thermodynamic reference empowers atmospheric scientists to build high-fidelity global climate models, forecast urban air quality, and evaluate the environmental fate of industrial emissions across the globe.

Title

Compilation of Henry's law constants (version 4.0) for water as solvent

Abstract

Abstract. Many atmospheric chemicals occur in the gas phase as well as in liquid cloud droplets and aerosol particles. Therefore, it is necessary to understand their distribution between the phases. According to Henry’s law, the equilibrium ratio between the abundances in the gas phase and in the aqueous phase is constant for a dilute solution. Henry’s law constants of trace gases of potential importance in environmental chemistry have been collected and converted into a uniform format. The compilation contains 46 434 values of Henry’s law constants for 10 173 species, collected from 995 references. It is also available on the internet at https://www.henrys-law.org (last access: October 2023). This article is a living review that supersedes the now obsolete publication by Sander (2015).
